Welcome to St.Thomas'
Prayer for Lent
Loving God,
As we begin this season of Lent,
help us to open our hearts to You.
Teach us to be kind, patient, and forgiving,
just as Jesus shows us.
Guide us to make good choices,
to care for those in need,
and to try our best each day.
May this special time bring us closer to You,
and fill our school community with peace, hope,
and Your loving presence.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

As we settle into Term 1, it has been wonderful to see students reconnecting with friends, embracing new learning opportunities, and contributing so positively to the life of our school community.
P & F SUNDOWNER – This Friday, 20 February
Tickets are still available for our P & F Sundowner this Friday at 6.30pm. This event is a fantastic opportunity for new and returning families to come together, meet one another, and celebrate the beginning of the school year. We look forward to seeing many of you there.
THE BEGINNING OF LENT
This week marks the beginning of Lent. As a school community, we will take time to reflect, pray, and focus on acts of kindness and service. Students will engage in meaningful, age‑appropriate activities and liturgies to help them understand the significance of this important season in our Church calendar.
A GUIDE TO HOMEWORK
Homework at St Thomas’ is designed to support learning without adding unnecessary pressure. Students are encouraged to complete short, purposeful tasks from Monday to Thursday, with daily reading (10–20 minutes) remaining our highest priority. If homework is taking too long or causing stress, please contact your child’s teacher. Thank you for supporting positive routines and independence at home. A guide to homework at St Thomas’ is available on our school website and can be accessed HERE.
LOOKING AHEAD: Strategic Plan Launch
In the coming weeks, we will be launching our new Strategic Plan, outlining the vision and priorities that will guide the next chapter of St Thomas’ Primary School. Further information about key initiatives, upcoming events, and policy updates will be shared throughout the term. We look forward to sharing this important work with you as we continue to strengthen our thriving school community.
Wishing all families a wonderful week ahead.

EXCELLENCE
Our 2026 focus value is Excellence. Students (and staff!) have been discussing how Excellence looks in the everyday activities of school. It is about doing YOUR best, not being THE best. With no excuses. We will continue to promote Excellence as a value across 2026.
NAPLAN
All Year Three and Year Five students will take part in Australia-wide NAPLAN tests, which start Wednesday 11 March. While these tests are important, we do not wish to put undue pressure on students and promote that it is one test on one day reflecting a small snapshot of a child’s learning. There are many more important qualities, learnings and gifts that better reflect the amazing person your child is and this should be discussed in a balanced view of tests such as NAPLAN. The testing schedule is below:
Wed 11 Mar – Writing
Thu 12 Mar – Reading
Fri 13 Mar – Conventions of Language
Mon 16 Mar – Numeracy
Tue 17 Mar – catch-up tests as needed for absent students for the remainder of the week.
If you believe your child should be exempt from these tests, please contact your child’s teacher and/or myself to discuss as soon as possible.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT
All classes have revised the Student Code of Conduct. St Thomas’ students created this three years ago based on their understanding of all students wanting to feel happy, safe, comfortable and to have fun at school.
HIGHWAY HEROES
Along with the Parent Overviews at the end of Week One, teachers have sent information regarding the Highway Heroes curriculum being taught this term. Highway Heroes is the school’s social-emotional program equipping students with specific strategies and skills to solve issues as they journey on the highway of life. It promotes child-centred problem-solving, with support from staff at the point of need. More information can be obtained at the start of each term, or through your child’s teacher.
ROWE PARK
Our Year Five and Six students utilise Rowe Park (two blocks away from the school) as part of our Friday afternoon Sport program. Students walk to Rowe Park with staff at 1:20pm on Friday and return at 2:55pm. On occasions, other classes may use this area as needed, predominantly for sport sessions where more room is required. Physical Education lessons remain on site.
iPAD PROGRAM
If your Year 5 or 6 child has changed iPads since the end of last year, please advise the school so we can provision management software and the distribution of apps to the new device.
SWIMMING TRIALS / SWIMMING CARNIVAL
More information and forms will be sent to all Year Three to Year Six parents by early next week. This will include a request for helpers at the trials. Please note the important dates below:
– Swimming trials – Tuesday 10/3 – Week 6
– Swimming Carnival – Friday 20/3 – Week 7
– Interschool Swimming Carnival – 24/4 Term 2 Week 1
SCHOOL-HOME COMMUNICATION
There are many forms of communication used at St Thomas’. In all our interactions, we strive for open, honest and respectful dialogue. Each individual student remains at the centred of our decision making and discussion. Please see a list below of the various forms, so you know where to look and what to expect.
SMS – for urgent, time-sensitive information and reminders
Emails – for day-to-day communications between staff and parents, during business hours (8am-5pm). Staff will respond within 48hours, often within 24hours.
Website – links such as absent form, school calendar (can be subscribed to), newsletters, staff information, and links to parent resources/documents.
Seesaw – for class based information and student digital learning portfolio access.
Phone calls and face to face meetings – for 1:1 conversations regarding specific matters
Microsoft Teams – upon an invitation link for school meetings (e.g. P&F meetings) and scheduled teacher-parent meeting days.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
Already this year the Year Four to Year Six students have discussed password security for their CEWA accounts. Students in Year Three have a password created for them, Year Four and Five create and record their own with teacher assistance, Year Six students are totally responsible for the creation, changing and remembering of the password. We support students with digital security throughout the year, if you would like any further information please make contact with myself. Our IT Code of Conduct and an iPad Home Contract will be sent home early next week for parents to discuss their expectations, and read through the school expectations, of using technology devices as part of their learning program.
SAFE SHARING OF BACK TO SCHOOL PHOTOS
Some tips for parents and carers:
– Keep your child’s personal information including full name and age private
– Ensure the background of photos or videos doesn’t give away your address or location (and don’t post your location or ‘check in’)
– Avoid posting photos in school uniform on social media
– Only share images of your children with people you know and trust
– For community accounts, consider having a closed group with approved members and ensure you have strong privacy settings in place.

Lent at St Thomas’ – A Time to Grow
LENT
Lent is a very special season in our Church year. It’s a time when we slow down, think about Jesus, and find little ways to grow in kindness, love, and prayer. During these forty days, we encourage our students to look for moments to help others, make thoughtful choices, and spend quiet time with God.
At school, we will be learning about Lent through prayer, stories, and simple acts of service. Families are invited to join us by talking with children about how we can be more like Jesus each day—whether that’s by sharing, including others, or offering a small sacrifice for someone we love.
SHROVE TUESDAY & ASH WEDNESDAY
Yesterday, we celebrated Shrove Tuesdays with pancakes. A big thank you to our parents for organising pancakes for the whole school, enjoyed with buddies. This morning, we participated in an Ash Wednesday liturgy in the hall. to Students, staff and parents received ashes on their foreheads in the shape of a cross. This is a sign that God invites us to make a fresh start.
PROJECT COMPASSION BOXES
Project Compassion boxes are part of our Lenten tradition, inviting families to place money into these boxes to support Caritas Australia’s work in providing clean water, education, healthcare and essential assistance to vulnerable communities.
Families can raise money at home by doing extra household jobs, collecting loose change in a coin jar, giving up a small treat and donating the savings, baking and sharing goodies for a gold‑coin donation, or adding coins each time a child completes an act of kindness.
These simple efforts help fill our Project Compassion boxes and make a real difference to communities in need during Lent. This act of generosity helps us live out our Catholic call to prayer, fasting and almsgiving, with boxes returned to school or parish near Easter. Every family received a box at the end of our liturgy this morning.

Service in our Community
This week, we are delighted to share a truly inspiring example of service from one of our Year 6 students, Javiera.
During a recent visit to Chile, Javiera demonstrated remarkable compassion, leadership, and commitment to helping others. Together with her extended family, she helped prepare, cook, and deliver 120 lunches to people from low‑income and vulnerable backgrounds. Javiera was involved in every step of the process—from planning and cooking the meals to personally delivering them to those in need.
This experience was deeply meaningful and emotional for her and her family, creating lasting memories and highlighting the powerful impact that small acts of kindness can have on individuals and communities.
At St Thomas’, we encourage our students to follow Christ’s example of service by looking for ways to show care, generosity, and empathy. Stories like Javiera’s remind us that serving others is not just an action, but a way of living—one that strengthens our faith and helps us build a more connected and compassionate world.
We congratulate Javiera on her beautiful act of service and hope her story inspires all our students and families to continue seeking opportunities to make a positive difference.

To accommodate this change, our school may make minor adjustments to the daily timetable. These adjustments will ensure students receive the same amount of learning time as in previous years, with no change to our teaching, learning, or pastoral care programs.

Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)
At school, students regularly take part in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time. During DEAR, the whole school pauses to enjoy quiet reading together—students, teachers and staff included.
DEAR is about reading for pleasure. Children choose books that interest them and spend time building strong reading habits in a calm, focused environment. Research shows that regular reading helps improve vocabulary, comprehension and concentration, and supports learning across all subject areas.
Most importantly, DEAR helps children see reading as something enjoyable and valuable, not just schoolwork. When adults read alongside students, it sends a powerful message that reading is important at every age.
Families can support DEAR by encouraging daily reading at home, allowing children to choose their own books and modelling reading themselves. Even a few minutes each day can make a big difference.
Together, we are helping our children become confident, capable and enthusiastic readers.
