Welcome to St.Thomas'

Prayer: Feast of the Assumption

Dear Mary, Mother of Jesus, On this special feast day,

we remember how God brought you into heaven,

body and soul, because of your great love and faith. You said “yes” to God with all your heart,

and you showed us how to live with kindness, courage, and trust.

Help us to follow your example, To listen to God, To care for others, And to always believe in His love.

Pray for us, Mary, That we may grow closer to Jesus every day.

Amen.

From the Principal

This Friday, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a significant day in the Church calendar that honours Mary’s unwavering faith and love for God. It commemorates the moment Mary was taken into heaven, body and soul, and offers a beautiful opportunity for our students to reflect on her example of trust, kindness, and devotion. We will mark this occasion at school through prayer and learning experiences that deepen our children’s understanding of Mary’s role in our faith. Families are warmly invited to join us for Mass at 9am on Friday in the Church.

YEAR 6 – SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

Congratulations to our Year 6 students who celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation last Saturday evening in the Parish, a significant milestone in their faith journey. Confirmation strengthens the candidates’ bond with Christ and is one of the Church’s Initiation Sacraments. This year’s celebration was led by the Vicar General, Reverend Vincent Glynn. Sincere thanks to Mr Godsall, Mrs Gibbs, Father Garner, and Sr Catherine for their dedication in preparing the students so beautifully. Special thanks to our parent helpers who helped with preparations and the flower arrangements in the Church. Please keep our candidates and their families in your prayers.

CATHOLIC PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL

Well done to all our students participating in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival! We look forward to upcoming performances in Dance this Friday evening at the Perth Convention Centre, followed by school entries in Rock Band, Choral, Sacred Choral, and Drama. Individual performances will continue over the coming weeks. Best of luck to all our talented performers!

ANGELICO ART COMPETITION

The Angelico Art Exhibition is a prestigious annual event showcasing the artistic talents of Catholic students across WA. Named after Blessed Fra Angelico, Patron of Artists, this exhibition will be held at the Forrest Centre, Perth, from Monday 11 August to Friday 29 August, featuring works from our very own St Thomas’ students. A special viewing session is scheduled for Saturday 23 August, 1.30–3pm. We warmly invite staff, families, and the wider school community to attend.

SLIP LANE
A reminder that rangers are patrolling the area around our school during drop-off and pick-up times. All parents are asked to be considerate of our neighbours by not parking in their driveways or blocking the roads. Please drive as far forward in the slip lane as possible, stay in your vehicle and school staff can help children enter the vehicle from the school side of the car. If you have any questions or queries, please speak with me. Often, a 10-15second wait at the stop sign will allow multiple cars behind to also enter the slip lane in an orderly, and most importantly safe, manner.

SCHOOL PHOTOS
Thank you for ensuring your children were in correct uniform. We understand the various uniforms and changes of days can be confusing, but it is appreciated to have students in the correct uniform. Emails have been sent giving details about purchasing photos. If you require any further information, please consult the information sheet sent home previously, or contact reception for assistance.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ASSESSMENT
Congratulations to the Year Three and Five classes for completing the REA – a CEWA-wide test of Religious Education. Results will be available through Seqta Engage once we receive them (similarly to end of semester reports). This was the first year the test used ‘adaptive testing’, to further, more specifically, assess the level of student understanding.

Drama Production - Peter Pan

This year the year 5 and 6 drama club are proud to present the production of “Peter Pan” from the script by Kate Brier.
The children tell the story of Peter Pan, a boy who wouldn’t grow up. Join them as they take you on an adventure to Neverland, meet the Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, along with other iconic characters like Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, the Lost Kids, Pirates, Mermaids and the Wildlings.
We look forward to sharing the adventures with you over the two nights, as we think happy thoughts and add a little magic pixie dust.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) at St Thomas’

Term 2 – Earth and Space Sciences: Under our feet and beyond our skies!

Across the school, students explored Earth’s resources, weather, seasons, and space systems. They learnt how natural phenomena impact our lives and how we can act responsibly as global citizens.

· Pre-Primaries learnt about different types of weather and the seasons. Each week they were very keen to point out their observations of weather patterns.

· Year 1s looked at Earth’s landscapes including constructed, managed and natural features.

· Year 2s went for a walk around the school to see where we use Earth’s resources. They learnt about the Water Cycle and how water gets into our taps from different sources.

· Year 3s investigated how the Earth’s rotation causes night and day, and how the tilt and orbit of the Earth causes seasons.

· Year 4s learnt about the different types of rocks we find on Earth using chocolate! They learnt about how humans have changed the surface of the Earth and what we can do to reduce our impact.

· Year 5s explored the solar system comparing planetary features and they observed and learnt about the phases of the moon.

· Year 6s studied natural disasters, focussing on one disaster, and investigated what humans can do to prepare for different types of disasters.

Our students are developing a strong appreciation for the wonders of our planet—and beyond!

We also held Science Week during Term 2 as the theme “Decoding the Universe” fitted nicely into this term’s strand. Lots of fun activities were undertaken by all our Pre-Primaries to Year 6s in their Science lessons.

Term 3 – Physical Sciences: Forces, Energy, and Motion in Action

In Physical Sciences, students are investigating how things move and change. From light and sound to heat and electrical energy, our learners are experimenting with real-world applications and engineering thinking.

· Pre-Primaries are learning about different types of movement, e.g. rolling, spinning, bouncing, and will design a playground that includes these types of movement.

· Year 1s are learning about light and how we see, later in the term they will be exploring how sound is made through vibrations using musical instruments and making their own noise-makers at the end of term.

· Year 2s are pushing and pulling and will be using their knowledge of these forces to plan and construct a teddy transporter to get Mrs Cloud’s teddy up a ramp.

· Year 3s are following on from their STEM lessons and investigating heat in more depth, including investigating insulators and conductors and learning about the movement of particles in materials as they heat up and cool down.

· Year 4s are expanding on their knowledge of forces to include different types of forces. They will be creating an investigation to show Newton’s Third Law of Motion (that every force has an equal and opposite reaction) and investigating how the magnitude and direction of a force makes a difference to the motion of an object.

· Year 5s are building on their knowledge of light energy and will be going into more depth around how we can see and what happens when our eyes don’t work quite as they should, they will be looking at how our brain works with electrical signals from the eye and how this can cause optical illusions. They will be investigating reflection, refraction and absorption of light and learn about how these properties are used in everyday life.

· Year 6s have been building electric circuits to test how electricity flows, as term goes on they will be learning about and building series and parallel circuits using different components, including making their own electromagnets.

STEM Enrichment

During this semester Years 5 and 6 are taking part in STEM enrichment, they have already learnt about the 6 simple machines, energy transfers involving potential and kinetic energy, how Work = Force x Distance, and the Design Thinking Process as the theoretical basis for creating their own Rube Goldberg machines. They are very excited to be onto the planning stage of their machines and we have seen some wonderful ideas already! We will also be welcoming some real-life Engineers into the sessions to help with the planning and building.

Alumni News

This week we have included an Alumni section to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our past pupils. This week we feature news about Ruben Ragnauth (Class of 2022) and Christian (Class of 2021) and Hamish Lorbeer (Class of 2023). Please see their achievements below.
  • Ruben Ragnauth – St Thomas’ (Class of 2022)
In 2024, Ruben Ragnauth was selected to be part of the national Youth Steering Committee, a group of young people from every state and territory. He works with the Office for Youth, and the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition to implement the Australian Government’s youth engagement strategy, Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make, and on the issues and policies that matter most to young people in Australia.
The Youth Steering Committee will be meeting together in Canberra again this month, Ruben is looking forward to meeting the new Minister for Youth, Senator the Hon Dr Jess Walsh.
  • Christian Lorbeer – St Thomas (Class of 2021)
  • Hamish Lorbeer St Thomas (Class of 2023)
My four children often express gratitude for their time at St Thomas’ Primary School, particularly with recounts of camps, school excursions and sporting events. Recently, both of the younger two – independently and unprompted- reflected on how thankful they were for the Oracy opportunities that began in Year 3.  Hamish (our youngest) had just finished presenting a semester long project and excelled whilst Christian (our third child) had just been selected to represent the school at the Public Schools Association Model United Nations discussing the topic Differentiating between Cyber War, Terrorism and Crime.
We have no doubt that their early training in public speaking, negotiation, teamwork and collaboration skills were supporting each of them to feel confident in stepping up to that next level now that they are in high school.  I look forward to hearing how the oracy program continues to nurture articulate, capable voices in our youth.
Simone Lorbeer
Parent of Christian (Class of 2021) and Hamish Lorbeer (Class of 2023)

Term 3 Year 5/6 Market Day Stalls, which will take place on Friday 19 September (Week 9) from 12:00–1:20pm on the school basketball courts and undercover area. Students are welcome to purchase items from the stalls. More information to follow.

Athletics Carnival

We are looking forward to our Athletics Carnival on Friday, 5 September, held at McGillivray Oval; UWA Sports Ground. It will be a fun filled day of competition, team spirit, and personal bests! As in previous years, we will be needing parent helpers to ensure the day runs smoothly, more information will be shared closer to the date.

Run Club Returns – Starting Week 3!

Run Club kicks off again on Friday mornings at 7:50am, beginning Week 3. Students will train at Rowe Park before walking back to school by 8:25am.

To continue offering this valuable opportunity for our students, we require parent volunteers to help supervise the course at Rowe Park and walk the children back to school. Without parent support, we will unfortunately be unable to run the club.

If you’re available to help, even occasionally, your support would be most appreciated!
