From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 3!
We are delighted to see our students return, ready to embark on new learning adventures. A special welcome to our new students, Aviva (Year 4), Thomas (Year 2), Darcy (Year 1), Noah & James (Pre-Kindergarten), and their families. We hope you feel warmly embraced by our wonderful school community.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

The first two weeks of term have been filled with vibrant celebrations of NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” was beautifully honoured during our school liturgy led by the Year 2 students. On Wednesday, students participated in a First Nations language workshop, exploring traditional language and song. Buddy activities included visual arts, music and dance, games, and classroom-based learning. It was heartwarming to see the students’ enthusiasm and the care they showed towards their buddies.

Good Habits Start Young

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping children develop digital intelligence, the social, emotional, and practical skills needed to navigate the digital world safely and respectfully. Even for preschool-aged children, it’s never too early to instil good habits. As your child grows, it’s helpful to keep reinforcing the core principles of digital intelligence: respect, empathy, critical thinking, responsible behaviour, and resilience. These values are especially important to revisit when things go wrong online.

Sacrament of Confirmation

Our Year 6 students are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, a significant milestone in their faith journey. This celebration will be led by the Vicar General, Father Vincent Glynn, at the Parish Mass on Saturday, 9 August at 5:30pm. Sincere thanks to Mr Godsall, Mrs Gibbs, and Sr Catherine for their dedicated preparation of the candidates. Please keep these students and their families in your prayers.

Catholic Performing Arts Festival

Last week marked the beginning of the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, starting with the Opening Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral. Our students were honoured to dramatise the Gospel in front of Catholic schools from across the state. Special thanks to Mrs Nicole Wills, our Performing Arts Specialist, for her guidance and preparation.

On Friday, three of our students represented the school in the Bible Reading category and did a fantastic job. Throughout the term, students will participate in individual instrumental performances (violin, piano, vocal, guitar, and drums) as well as group performances in Sacred Choral, Choir, Drama, and Rock Band. We wish all our performers the very best!

TERM 3 CLUBS
Please click here for the Term Three Clubs opportunities. Thank you to staff for taking on these extra roles, aimed at supporting students in areas of interest, and to mix with other like-minded students.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ASSESSMENT
In Catholic schools across Western Australia, students enrolled in Years 3, 5 and 9 participate in a system-wide, online assessment in Religious Education. The administration of the assessment in 2025 occurs on Wednesday 6 August. Students following a regular classroom program are expected to participate. The purpose of the REA is to measure student learning of the mandated content in the Religious Education Curriculum. Test items relevant to each participating year level are developed by the Religious Education Directorate at the Catholic Education Office of Western Australia. The test items consist of multiple choice, short and extended response. The students’ faith is not assessed. Formal student and school reports are produced from the data generated from the REA. The reports will be distributed once made available to the school, sometime in Term Four.

PARKING, DROP-OFFS AND PICK-UPS
While parking spaces are not in abundance in the residential area our school is located, please understand the need to follow Town of Claremont parking rules and by-laws. Rangers have been active around the school to ensure rules are followed for the safety of our students, our parents and our neighbours. Fines have been issued for parking in ‘no parking’ areas, and for slip-lane parking during pick-up and drop-off times. As a WA Road law, all vehicles must come to a complete stop at the line next to the stop sign on Warden street, before proceeding along College Road, or risk an infringement notice from WA Police.

NAPLAN RESULTS  – YEARS 3 & 5
Hard copy reports will be distributed to students via a sealed envelope to give to parents on Friday afternoon, 1 August. Please check with your child as soon as you can to ensure this document is received.

CATHOLIC PERFORMING ARTS
Congratulations to our students who were involved in dramatisation of the Gospel at St Mary’s Cathedral last Wednesday. It was a sensational, reverent contribution to the Opening Mass. Thank you Nicole Wills for her tremendous work in preparing students, costumes and props. Also thank you to Angela Jarrott for assisting with transport on the day.

Catholic Performing Arts Opening Mass

The 36th Catholic Performing Arts Festival opened on Thursday the 24th July with a beautiful Mass held at St Marys Cathedral. This year the St Thomas’ students were invited to Dramatise the Gospel of Luke 4:16-21. A small group of students performed the retelling of the Gospel, spreading the message of Jesus’ announcement that the spirit of God is upon him, that Isaiahs’s prophecy has been fulfilled and proclaiming Jesus’ mission to bring Gods grace and justice to the world.

The students worked tirelessly throughout Term 2, rehearsing and preparing for their performance. Through the many hours of practice, they are to be commended for their enthusiasm, dedication and effort. On the day the students performed the piece with heartfelt connection and grace, enhancing and sharing the Gospels sincere message. It was a wonderful performance.

Performing Arts Festival

Now the Festival has been officially opened, in the upcoming weeks, Bible readers, actors, dancers, musicians shall share their diverse gifts and talents with the community. Parents are welcome to attend the Festival performances; tickets must be booked online at www.spiritofthearts.com.au through Try Booking. Performers do not need a ticket and please purchase family tickets online before attending sessions as there are no door sales.

Year One News

This term, our Year 1 students have travelled the world and are now embarking on a wonderful journey of discovery, learning all about Australia, its rich history, and the incredible contributions of The First Nations People.

We will begin by exploring how Australia has changed over time, looking at the land, people, and culture. Through engaging discussions and hands-on activities, students will learn about the importance of country and place and how First Nations Peoples have cared for the land for tens of thousands of years and what we can and have learnt from them.

A highlight has been reading and reflecting on Dreamtime stories over these past few weeks, which have helped us understand the deep spiritual connection First Nations Peoples have with the land, animals and each other. These stories have sparked thoughtful conversations and inspired beautiful artwork and story writing in our classroom which we look forward to sharing. This week, we also enjoyed celebrating NAIDOC Week with our Year 5 buddies. Together, we explored the 2025 NAIDOC theme and participated in fun and engaging activities that deepened our appreciation and respect. It was a special opportunity to connect, learn and celebrate together.

In our maths lessons we have started learning about Australian coins – understanding their value and exploring how we use money in everyday life. Students have loved identifying the animals and Australian symbols on the coins and learning about what these designs represent.

Throughout our learning, we’ve focused on respect, curiosity, and appreciation – recognising the wisdom and knowledge we gain from First Nations Peoples and celebrating the diversity of our shared history as Australian citizens.

We’re so proud of the thoughtful questions and creative work the Year 1s have produced and are super excited to welcome you all into the classroom on your own path of discovery of Australia.
