Prayer for World Environment Day
Loving God, you created our beautiful world and call us to care for it.
Inspired by Laudato Si’ and Saint Francis of Assisi, help us walk gently on the Earth, protect nature, and care for one another.

Amen.

From the Principal
Last Friday, 5 June, we celebrated World Environment Day, a global occasion dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting our environment. At St Thomas’, sustainability is a key focus in our Strategic Plan, and we are committed to nurturing a culture of care for our Earth.
Staff were recently reminded of the deep connection between sustainability and our Catholic faith, particularly through the teachings of Pope Francis and the example of St Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ calls us to care for our common home by showing kindness to nature and to one another. In Visual Arts, students explored the story of St Francis of Assisi, creating thoughtful artworks that reflect his journey and his commitment to living simply and sustainably. These pieces were recently showcased at a parish Laudato Si’ event and will also feature in our bi-annual Arts Show in October.
Alongside our focus on environmental stewardship, we continue to strengthen learning through classroom enrichment. At St Thomas’, enrichment is embedded in everyday teaching and learning, it is not an ‘extra’, but an approach that ensures all students are challenged, extended and inspired. Through differentiated tasks, open-ended learning opportunities, and opportunities for creativity and critical thinking, every child is given the chance to deepen their understanding and pursue areas of interest.
Importantly, enrichment at St Thomas’ is inclusive. Every student, in every classroom, has access to opportunities that stretch their thinking and celebrate their unique gifts. This might be through inquiry-based learning, problem-solving in Mathematics, rich discussions in Literacy, or creative expression in the Arts. Our teachers work thoughtfully to provide meaningful learning experiences that encourage curiosity, independence and a love of learning.
Together, these two focus areas, care for our environment and rich, engaging learning, reflect our commitment to nurturing the whole child, grounded in faith and inspired to make a positive difference in the world.

From the Assistant Principal
Over the coming weeks, our school calendar reflects an exciting and purposeful period of learning brought to life. Students will have opportunities to showcase their thinking, connect with faith formation activities, and express their creativity through events such as the STEM Showcase, the Junior Ethics Olympiad, debating competitions, the Winter Carnival and many liturgical celebrations.
These experiences highlight how learning is becoming increasingly visible, with students applying their skills in authentic, engaging contexts that encourage problem-solving, collaboration, team-work and critical thinking. The arts, sport, and co-curricular opportunities will play a significant role during this time. Edu-Dance, the upcoming Drama Club production, and a range of incursions provide students with opportunities to build confidence, skill and resilience.
At the heart of everything remains our commitment to faith and partnership. Celebrations, including Parish Masses, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, LifeLink Day, and preparation for the Sacrament of the Eucharist, provide meaningful moments for reflection and spiritual growth. These celebrations sit at the heart of our school as its purpose. Events and activities such as these strengthen the important connection between home and school, ensuring that each child’s learning journey is shared, supported, and celebrated. The vision of the Presentation Sisters many years ago, also promoted ‘Educating the Whole’ child, and we maintain this focus today, for every individual child at St Thomas’ Primary School.

Ordering Lunch Online?
Lunch Orders Reminder
Just a friendly reminder to please ensure all lunch orders are completed online correctly.
When placing your child’s order, please wait for and check that you receive a confirmation email. This confirms that the order has been successfully processed. If you do not receive a confirmation email, the order may not have gone through and your child will be left without lunch.
Although Lunch Box often supply a spare sandwich it isn’t always a guarantee. Its great in an emergency but we are having increased numbers of students who are expecting a lunch order that doesn’t arrive. We appreciate that the system involves different steps especially confusing when you’re juggling things during a busy morning.
Please also note: when ordering lunch online, recess needs to be packed. Most children can’t wait until lunch for their food.
Thank you for your support in helping us ensure all lunch orders run smoothly and your child/ren are not disappointed at lunch time.

LifeLink 2026: Archbishop’s Official Launch
On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to attend the Archbishop’s Official Launch of LifeLink Day for Primary Schools 2026 with students from many other schools.
We drove about 30 minutes to get to Corpus Christi College in Bateman, and when we arrived, we learned about Saint Francis of Assisi and how important it is to always be kind to others, no matter what. We also learned that LifeLink raises money to help people in need, including those who are homeless, struggling families, and people who feel lonely or isolated.
At the event, we saw Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, Bishop Don Sproxton, and Bishop Nelson Poe. Students from Corpus Christi College also attended and led the Acknowledgement of Country. We listened to prayers, including Saint Teresa’s prayer, and learned more about helping others.
One of our favourite parts was asking questions. During question time, we asked Bishop Don what Bible story he reflects on, and which saint inspires him in everyday life.
After the questions, we had morning tea before heading back to school.
Now, we are excited to organise a fundraiser for LifeLink at our school. We have decided on a fun idea, a Crazy Hair Day, on Friday 3 July, to help raise money and support people in need.
This experience helped us understand how important it is to be kind and to help others in our community.

School Disco Fun!
Last Friday evening, our school disco was a wonderful celebration of fun, music and creativity, with this year’s theme of Favourite Movie Characters. It was fantastic to see so many students embracing the theme, with a wide range of marvellous costumes on display, truly a highlight of the night!
There was plenty of energy on the dance floor, with students enjoying time with their friends. A big thank you to DJ Shaun for providing the music and keeping everyone entertained throughout the evening.
We also extend our sincere thanks to the Year 6 parents for their generous support in setting up the event and organising the pizza, it was greatly appreciated and helped make the night such a success.
It was clear that the children had a great time, and we look forward to many more joyful community events like this in the future.
Premiers Reading Challenge
Premier’s Reading Challenge concludes this Friday 12 June.
Student Reporting at Our School
During 2025 and 2026, we are continuing to implement the revised WA Curriculum. As part of this, we share information about your child’s learning and progress in a variety of ways.
How We Communicate with Families
We report to parents and carers through:
· Formal reports – mid-year and end-of-year reports
· Informal updates – via SEQTA, Seesaw, emails and conversations
· Parent meetings – including scheduled and requested appointments
What You Will See in Reports
In both mid-year and end-of-year reports, your child will receive a grade for each learning area (such as English or Mathematics).
This grade:
· Reflects your child’s overall achievement in that subject
· Is based on a range of assessments and classroom work
· Is determined against the WA Achievement Standards, which describe what most students are expected to achieve by the end of the year
Whole Learning Area Approach
In the past, reports sometimes included separate grades for areas such as reading and writing.
Catholic Education WA schools are now adopting a whole learning area approach, meaning:
· Students receive one overall grade per subject
· This reflects how different skills (e.g. reading and writing) are connected and used together in learning
Understanding Your Child’s Progress
Teachers gather evidence through a range of assessments and use professional judgement to determine grades.
More detailed information about your child’s progress in specific skills (such as reading, writing, or maths concepts) will be shared during:
· Parent–teacher meetings
· Ongoing communication throughout the year
Mid-Year Reports
Mid-year reports show your child’s progress based on:
· What has been taught and assessed so far
· Their achievement in relation to the expected standard at that point in the year
Supporting Individual Learning Needs
Some students follow a modified or differentiated curriculum to support their individual needs. For these students:
· An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed
· Reports will reflect their progress against personalised learning goals
