Welcome to St.Thomas'

A Prayer of Gratitude for Our Students' Gifts and Talents

Loving God, We thank You for the bright minds, kind hearts, and unique talents of each student in our school. You have blessed them with creativity, curiosity, and courage, gifts that shine in the classroom, on the playground, and beyond.

Help us to nurture these gifts with patience and joy. May each child feel seen, valued, and inspired to grow into the person You created them to be. Guide their hands as they learn, their voices as they speak, and their spirits as they dream.

We celebrate their achievements, both big and small, and give thanks for the journey ahead. May our school continue to be a place where every gift is welcomed, every talent is treasured, and every child knows they are deeply loved.

Amen.

LEARNING JOURNEY

It was wonderful to welcome so many parents and families to our Learning Journey on Tuesday afternoon. The classrooms were alive with energy, and the quality and diversity of student work and activities on display were truly impressive. If you would like to discuss your child’s progress further, please feel free to arrange a meeting with your child’s class teacher to discuss their progress at any time. As always, we greatly value your feedback. If you haven’t already, we’d appreciate you taking a moment to complete the feedback form HERE.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

What a fantastic day we shared on Monday at the St Thomas’ Primary Sports Carnival! I acknowledge that the change of date due to wet weather did pose a few challenges for families, however we were rewarded by the change with sunshine, smiles, and a wonderful sense of community. I was thrilled to see our students enthusiastically participating and cheering each other on, showing the true spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork. A special thank you to Miss Wallace for her outstanding organisation and tireless efforts in bringing the carnival to life. We’re also deeply grateful to our dedicated staff and supportive parents who helped make the day such a success. A special thank you to Angela Jarrott, whose energy and enthusiasm as our announcer kept the momentum going and spirits high throughout the event.

TOURNAMENT OF THE MINDS (TOMs)

Congratulations to our three Tournament of Minds (TOMs) teams that competed in the state wide competition last Saturday at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup. The three disciplines tackled by our students were STEM, Language/Literature and Social Sciences. An outstanding performance by all students. Thank you to Mrs Cloud for preparing these students for the competition.

DRAMA PRODUCTION

I am in constant awe of the amazing talents of our students at St Thomas’. ‘Peter Pan’ was presented by the Drama Club last week, across two evening and several matinees, once again showcasing the performance skills of our students. Thank you, Mrs Nicole Wills, our Drama Specialist, Mrs Sam Valentine and Mrs Sue Vincent for their assistance, and to Patrycia Spears and our wonderful team of parent helpers for their assistance. Students also performed two scenes at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival and were rewarded with an ‘Excellence Award.’ Congratulations to all!

END OF TERM THREE
With just a few weeks left in Term Three, students are enjoying well-established class routines and progressing across all learning areas. Teachers are supporting revision and reflection at this time of the year, helping students consolidate their learning. It is a valuable time for building confidence and celebrating achievements over what has been a very busy term. Our recent focus have included the elements of our St Thomas’ Vision Statement (i.e. what we want for every child at the school), as well as a recent discussion on ‘Be Kind’, which is almost always the right choice to make, but not necessarily the most popular, the most winningest, the funniest etc. We continue to prompt kindness with our students.

STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Behind the scenes, staff are preparing for a busy Term Four, including key events, liturgical celebrations, and curriculum planning. These preparations ensure a smooth and purposeful finish to the school year. We thank our dedicated team staff for their ongoing commitment to excellence and care. Recently, staff have been involved in professional development in English as an Additional Language/Dialect, Strategic Planning, viewing NAPLAN (another broader-staff session planned also), and CEWA wellbeing framework and understanding.

Sustainability at St Thomas'

At St Thomas, our commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in Catholic teachings, particularly Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’. This important document calls us to embrace integral ecology, which recognizes the deep connections between environmental care, social justice, and human dignity Inspired by Laudato Si’, we strive to shift from:

Consumption to generosity, Waste to sharing, Selfishness to solidarity

We take action by promoting sustainable practices, ecological education, and community resilience to care for our common home. The Laudato Si’ Action Platform supports our mission by offering goals and resources for Catholic communities around the world.

Practical Applications at St Thomas

As part of our Waste Audit, students are encouraged to recycle paper in classrooms.Waste paper is added to compost bins by students. Members of the Green Team contribute leaves and green waste to these bins.

Sustainable Practices in Everyday School Life:-

All students are encouraged to reuse and repurpose items within the classroom.

Sustainability is visible across all year levels through:

  • Roles like Light Monitors and Recycling Monitors.
  • Participation in student-led groups like the Green Team and Mini Vinnies.

Repurposed materials are widely used in classroom projects and Junior Primary Fine Motor activities, as well as Science and Visual Art lessons.

Mini Vinnies – Responding to the Cry of the Poor

Mini Vinnies students create and sell handmade items. All proceeds go to support those in need, embodying the value of compassion and social justice. Our most recent fundraiser was for The Tom Fisher Refuge for the homeless, where the children raised money to purchase toiletries for the homeless.

Staff Engagement and Community Involvement.

St Thomas staff recently participated in a professional learning session focused on the Laudato Si’ encyclical. This session helped identify priority actions for our school, aligned with our core values. Staff explored new ways to engage with students and the wider community in meaningful, sustainable action.

Living Our Values through Sustainable Initiatives

At St Thomas, sustainability is not just a program—it’s a way of life. You will see and hear our commitment in: Liturgies and Whole school gatherings and daily practices that reflect our Saint Thomas Values and care for creation.

Speak Up Awards

On Wednesday 20 August, Lucas and Giacomo from Year 6 and Eva from Year 5 were taken by Mrs Cloud to the Speak Up awards in Doubleview. Nerves were in the air but Eva’s speech on The Mystery of Amelia Earhart intrigued the adjudicators, Lucas’s speech on Hydraulics in Cars showed his deep knowledge of the subject, and Giacomo’s speech entitled Arti-techture had everyone thinking about how much art there really is in architecture. All three sought feedback from the adjudicators, which demonstrated their willingness to improve, and the judges were very positive in that feedback, mentioning how they presented well, made good eye contact with the audience, and choose interesting subject matter. Giacomo’s speech won him a place in the regional finals in the second week of September. A big well done to all three speakers, they were a credit to St. Thomas’!

Tournament of Minds
